Mulch is the fastest way to make beds look finished while doing real work — holding moisture, blocking weeds, and feeding the soil as it breaks down. The whole skill is depth: enough to suppress weeds, not so much you smother roots.

Tools you'll need

Step by step

  1. Weed and edge the beds Pull weeds and cut a clean edge so the mulch has a crisp border and stays out of the lawn.
  2. Spread an even layer Lay mulch 2–3 inches deep — enough to block light to weeds, not so deep it suffocates roots.
  3. Keep it off stems and trunks Pull mulch a few inches back from plant stems and tree trunks. Piling it against bark (a "mulch volcano") invites rot and pests.
  4. Rake smooth and water Level it out and give it a light watering to settle it in.

Common mistakes

Piling mulch too deep
2–3" is the sweet spot. Deeper layers stay soggy, repel water, and starve roots of air.
Mulch volcanoes around trees
Keep mulch off the trunk — a flat doughnut, not a cone — to prevent rot and rodent damage.
Mulching over existing weeds
Pull weeds first (or lay landscape fabric); mulch alone won't stop established weeds.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should mulch be?
2–3 inches for beds. That's enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering roots.
How much mulch do I need?
Enter your bed size and depth above — the calculator returns cubic yards (bulk) and 2-cu-ft bags with cost both ways.
When should I mulch?
Spring is ideal after the soil warms; a fall refresh helps protect roots over winter.
