Modern wallpaper — especially peel-and-stick and pre-pasted — has made a big comeback and is very DIY-able. Success comes from prepped walls, a true plumb starting line, and careful pattern matching so seams disappear.

DifficultyIntermediate
TimeA weekend for a feature wall or small room
SkillsPatience and a steady hand for matching patterns and smoothing seams

Tools you'll need

Step by step

  1. Prep and prime the wallsPatch, sand, and clean, then prime (or size) so paper adheres evenly and comes off cleanly later.
  2. Snap a plumb starting lineWalls are never perfectly straight — hang your first strip to a plumb line, not the corner, or the pattern drifts across the room.
  3. Hang and match the first dropsApply the first strip to the line, then match the pattern on the next, leaving a little extra at top and bottom to trim.
  4. Smooth out air and trimWork bubbles out from the center with the smoother, then trim top and bottom with a sharp blade against a wide knife.
  5. Roll the seamsButt (don't overlap) seams and roll them flat. Sponge off any paste before it dries.

Common mistakes

Not priming or sizing the wall
Paper bonds unevenly to bare drywall and tears the surface on removal. Prime first.
Starting off the corner instead of a plumb line
Out-of-plumb corners send the whole pattern crooked. Always start to a level line.
Overlapping seams
Butt seams tightly and roll them — overlaps cast shadows and lift over time.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
Enter the room size above — the calculator allows 15% for pattern repeat and returns double rolls.
Do I need to prep the walls?
Yes — patch, clean, and prime/size. Smooth, primed walls are what make seams disappear and removal painless.
Is peel-and-stick removable?
Most peel-and-stick papers are designed to come off cleanly, which makes them great for renters and feature walls.
