Topsoil is the foundation of a healthy lawn or garden. Whether you're leveling low spots, building beds, or prepping for sod, the keys are grading water away from the house and blending new soil into the old so roots can cross the line.
DifficultyBeginner
TimeAn afternoon to a day depending on area
SkillsSpreading and raking; a tiller helps on compacted ground
Tools you'll need
- Wheelbarrow
- Steel rake and a landscape rake
- Shovel
- Tiller (rent, for compacted soil)
- A board or grading rake for leveling
Step by step
- Clear and rough-grade Remove debris and rocks and establish a rough grade that slopes away from the foundation (about 1" per foot for the first several feet).
- Loosen the existing soil Till or scratch up compacted ground first so the new topsoil bonds instead of sitting on a hard pan that sheds water.
- Spread the topsoil Add topsoil to the depth you need — 2–3" to level a lawn, 4–6"+ for new beds — and rake it level.
- Amend and fine-grade Mix in compost for planting areas, then fine-rake to a smooth, even surface ready for seed, sod, or plants.
Common mistakes
Grading toward the house
Always slope soil away from the foundation, or you funnel water into the basement.
Topsoil over compacted clay
Loosen the base layer first; otherwise roots stall at the line and water sheds off the hardpan.
Spreading it too thin for grass
New lawns want a few inches of good soil for roots — a dusting over poor subsoil won't establish well.
Safety
- Pace the shoveling and lift with your legs — soil is heavier than it looks.
- Wear a mask if the soil is dusty.
Frequently asked questions
How much topsoil do I need?
Enter your area and depth above — the calculator returns cubic yards (bulk) and bags with cost both ways.
How deep should topsoil be for grass?
Aim for 4–6" of quality soil for a new lawn; 2–3" can work to top-dress and level an existing one.
Topsoil or garden soil?
Topsoil is the bulk base; garden/raised-bed soil is amended with compost and nutrients for planting. Many projects use topsoil plus compost.
