Pool base and backfill are system-specific. Above-ground kits, vinyl panel pools, fiberglass shells, and concrete/gunite pools do not use interchangeable assemblies. Treat these quantities as early purchasing and budget allowances until the approved plan and manufacturer instructions are in hand.

Step by step — Above-ground kit
- Verify the approved base Follow the pool manufacturer’s specified material and thickness. Remove high ground to reach level, undisturbed soil; do not casually build up a low side with loose fill.
- Protect the liner Remove stones and roots, compact the approved base evenly, and install the manufacturer-approved floor pad or cove system.
Step by step — Inground vinyl kit
- Use the kit dig sheet Wall height, panel bracing, collar dimensions, floor slopes, and base mix are controlled by the approved kit plan.
- Inspect before concealment Complete required wall, collar, pressure-test, bonding, and plumbing inspections before placing approved backfill.
Step by step — Fiberglass shell
- Prepare the specified stone base Set the subgrade and stone base to the shell manufacturer’s elevation and compaction requirements.
- Backfill and fill together Keep the shell supported and balanced by following the manufacturer’s exact sequence for water level and approved backfill placement.
Step by step — Concrete / gunite
- Build from engineered documents Shell thickness, reinforcing, penetrations, drains, and bonding are engineered and inspected before shotcrete.
- Use qualified shell and finish trades Shotcrete placement, curing, waterproofing, tile, coping, and interior finish require experienced crews and system-compatible materials.
Safety
- Never substitute an aggregate, floor mix, backfill, or compaction method without written approval from the pool system manufacturer or engineer.
- Licensed electrical and equipotential-bonding work must be inspected before it is covered.
- Crane/rigging and shotcrete placement are professional scopes.
Frequently asked questions
Can native soil be used as pool backfill?
Only when the approved pool plan or manufacturer expressly permits it. Many systems specify clean stone or another controlled material and placement sequence.
Is this quantity ready to order?
It is a planning allowance. Order from the approved pool plan, dig sheet, and field measurements after excavation.
