A pool excavation is larger than the finished water shape: the crew needs working room outside the shell, extra depth for the specified base, and haul capacity for soil that expands after digging. This calculator separates in-ground volume from loose haul volume.

DifficultyAdvanced / hire-out recommended
TimePlanning: 10 minutes; excavation: site-dependent
SkillsApproved dig sheet, survey/layout, grade control
PermitsPermit, utility locate, access plan, and often inspections are required before excavation.

Before the excavator arrives

Use the pool manufacturer’s or engineer’s dig sheet, confirm the benchmark elevation, mark setbacks and easements, and have utilities located. Verify machine and dump-truck access, overhead clearance, spoil placement, groundwater conditions, and where surface water will go.

Common mistakes

Estimating haul-off from the finished pool volume
Include working overdig, base depth, and loose-soil swell.
Starting without a benchmark elevation
Establish and protect a permanent benchmark before layout or excavation.

Frequently asked questions

What is working overdig?
Extra space outside the finished pool wall that permits wall assembly, plumbing, bracing, shell placement, and approved backfill. The required amount comes from the pool system’s dig sheet.
Why is loose soil volume larger?
Soil gains void space when disturbed. The calculator uses a 25% planning swell; actual swell depends on soil type and handling.
