How to Manage a DIY Inground Pool Build
A realistic DIY inground pool is a homeowner-managed construction project—not a promise that one person should self-perform every trade. Choose a system below to see the full sequence. You can manage layout, purchasing, schedules, documentation, and selected hands-on stages while qualified crews handle engineered structure, excavation hazards, lifting, electrical/bonding, gas, shotcrete, and specialized finishes.
1Approve the design and dig sheet
Select an engineered kit, survey the site, confirm setbacks/easements and drainage, locate utilities, and obtain the permit and inspection schedule. Freeze the pool elevation, equipment location, access route, barrier, and spoil plan.
2Lay out and excavate
Stake the waterline and dig limits from the approved dig sheet. A qualified excavation contractor should control slopes, groundwater, access, spoil, and the precise hopper/transition geometry.
3Set panels, braces, steps, and collar
Assemble the wall system on the approved base, square it from fixed measurements, brace it, install steps and fittings, and place the concrete collar only to the engineered kit detail.
4Build the specified pool floor and fit the liner
Shape and finish the pool floor to the dig sheet using the kit-specified mix. Clean every surface, install wall foam/gaskets where specified, fit the liner, and draw it into position using the manufacturer’s vacuum procedure before filling.
5Pressure-test plumbing and complete bonding
Install drains, skimmers, returns, equipment lines, valves, and pressure tests from the approved hydraulic plan. Licensed trades complete electrical, equipotential bonding, and any heater gas work.
6Backfill and fill in the required sequence
Keep water level, wall support, and approved backfill placement synchronized exactly as the kit manufacturer directs. Protect tested lines, compact only by the approved method, and document concealed work.
7Install coping, deck, drainage, and barriers
Coordinate isolation/movement joints, deck drainage, cover anchors, rails, gates, alarms, and equipment clearances before placing the deck.
8Commission and close out
Complete the final inspection, equipment startup, leak check, turnover documentation, warranties, emergency equipment, and barrier check before use. Follow product labels and professional startup instructions for water treatment.
1Select the shell and approve the site plan
Confirm the exact model, delivery truck and crane access, lifting plan, equipment location, elevations, drainage, setbacks, barrier, and manufacturer-authorized installer requirements before permitting.
2Excavate to the manufacturer dig plan
A qualified excavation crew establishes the benchmark and cuts the hole for the selected shell, working space, and specified base while controlling groundwater and unstable soil.
3Prepare and verify the stone base
Place and compact only the specified base aggregate, shape it to support the shell uniformly, and verify elevation and level at the manufacturer’s control points.
4Rig and set the shell
The qualified crane and setting crew uses approved lifting points, keeps everyone outside the exclusion zone, lowers the shell onto the prepared base, and confirms level and full support.
5Plumb, pressure-test, and bond
Install skimmers, returns, drains, equipment piping, valves, pressure tests, electrical, bonding, and any heater services from approved plans.
6Backfill and fill together
Add water and the manufacturer-approved backfill in controlled, balanced lifts so the shell is never unevenly loaded. Monitor shell level and wall shape continuously; stop if movement occurs.
7Complete deck, drainage, coping, and barriers
Follow the shell manufacturer’s collar/coping detail, isolate the deck where required, slope drainage safely, and complete gates, alarms, covers, and equipment clearances.
8Commission and close out
Complete equipment startup, leak checks, final approvals, warranty registration, operating handoff, emergency equipment, and barrier verification before use.
1Commission an engineered pool design
A qualified pool designer/engineer develops the geometry, structure, soils response, hydraulics, drains, equipment, bonding, waterproofing, finish, drainage, barrier, and inspection set.
2Lay out and excavate
A qualified crew transfers the engineered geometry and elevations to the site, excavates with the required working room, and manages spoil, access, soil stability, and groundwater.
3Install plumbing, steel, drains, and bonding
Qualified trades place pressure-tested plumbing, listed suction fittings, reinforcing steel, embedded items, and the equipotential bonding grid exactly as detailed.
4Place and cure the structural shell
The shotcrete/gunite contractor verifies mix, placement, cover, consolidation, trimming, penetrations, and curing requirements. Keep records required by the engineer and inspector.
5Waterproof, tile, and set coping
After the shell reaches the required condition, compatible systems are installed in their approved sequence. Movement joints, penetrations, waterline tile, coping, and waterproofing must work as one assembly.
6Build the deck, drainage, and barriers
Coordinate isolation joints, drainage, cover anchors, rails, gates, alarms, and equipment clearances before placing concrete or pavers.
7Apply the interior finish and begin filling
The finish contractor prepares and installs the specified plaster/aggregate system and directs the uninterrupted fill and startup procedure. Do not stop the fill or introduce chemicals outside that procedure.
8Commission and close out
Complete equipment commissioning, hydraulic and safety checks, final approvals, startup records, warranties, emergency equipment, and barrier verification before use.
