Fix small cosmetic damage before repainting a room. This guide covers dry, intact walls; it is not a repair plan for water damage or a rated assembly. Use the relevant calculator to estimate purchases, review the assumptions, then add the result to your project materials list.

1Check why the damage happened
Confirm the wall is dry and firm. Photograph the area and measure it. Recurring movement, staining, softness, or an unknown finish needs investigation before covering it. In older homes, assess lead and other suspect materials before disturbing finishes.
2Choose the smallest appropriate repair
A shallow dent may need only a compatible filler. For a hole, use a patch method approved for its size and wall type. Do not cut or drive screws blindly into a wall; identify hidden wiring and pipes first.
3Apply, dry, and feather
Follow the patch and compound instructions. Keep coats thin, allow the stated drying time, and feather beyond the patch. Control dust and use the protection specified for the product. A practice patch helps you judge the finish.
4Prime and repaint the repaired surface
Prime the repair as the paint system requires. Compare a touch-up in the actual light; repainting the full wall may blend better. Estimate the area you will really paint.

Usually not for a small cosmetic patch. Buy an appropriate patch or offcut after checking the repair size and method; the full-room sheet calculator is for larger replacement work.
Can I patch a wet wall?
Resolve the leak and assess damage first. A cosmetic patch hides the symptom and does not fix moisture or mold.
