Grass Seed for 2,500 Square Feet
For a 2,500 sq ft overseeding, the amount to buy depends on climate, sun, species, seed coating, and the label rate—not one universal number. The prefilled calculator starts with Kentucky bluegrass and can be changed below.

What changes for 2,500 sq ft?
Overseeding uses the selected overseeding rate. Switching to new lawn changes the quantity because the project starts with an existing stand rather than bare soil.
| Seeded grass | Climate fit | Overseeding quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Turf-type tall fescue | cool / transition | 10.0–15.0 lb |
| Kentucky bluegrass | cool | 2.5–5.0 lb |
| Perennial ryegrass | cool | 7.5–12.5 lb |
| Fine fescue | cool | 5.0–10.0 lb |
| Common bermudagrass (seeded) | transition / warm | 2.5–5.0 lb |
| Centipedegrass | warm | 0.63–1.3 lb |
| Zoysiagrass (seeded cultivar) | transition / warm | 2.5–5.0 lb |
| Bahiagrass | warm | 7.5–12.5 lb |
These are uncoated-seed planning ranges. Product labels control. St. Augustine and hybrid bermudagrass are excluded because they are established vegetatively.
Common bag-size choices
| Bag size | Bags | Approx. leftover |
|---|---|---|
| 5 lb | 1 | 1.3 lb |
| 10 lb | 1 | 6.3 lb |
| 20 lb | 1 | 16.3 lb |
| 25 lb | 1 | 21.3 lb |
| 40 lb | 1 | 36.3 lb |
| 50 lb | 1 | 46.3 lb |
At this size, smaller bags can reduce leftovers, but compare price per pound and make sure every bag is the same cultivar or mixture.
