Grass Seed for 500 Square Feet

For a 500 sq ft overseeding, the amount to buy depends on climate, sun, species, seed coating, and the label rate—not one universal number. The prefilled calculator starts with Kentucky bluegrass and can be changed below.

Kentucky bluegrass

Dense, cold-tolerant turf for sunny cool-season lawns; slower to establish.

The calculator uses the midpoint of the cited Extension range. Use your bag’s rate for coated seed, mixtures, or a product-specific rate.

Alternates worth comparing

Turf-type tall fescue: Durable and adaptable; a strong transition-zone and partial-shade choice.

Perennial ryegrass: Fast germination and good wear tolerance; often used in cool-season mixtures.

Planting window

Cool-season planning: late summer through early fall is usually the best establishment window; spring is the second choice. Confirm dates with your local Extension office.

Not sold as seed

St. Augustinegrass and hybrid bermudagrass are sod, plug, or sprig choices. They are excluded from seed math. Compare with the Sod Calculator →

Planning estimate. Adjust allowances and sample prices for your supplier; tax, delivery, and labor are not included.

What changes for 500 sq ft?

Overseeding uses the selected overseeding rate. Switching to new lawn changes the quantity because the project starts with an existing stand rather than bare soil.

Seed may fit when…

You can prepare the soil, keep the surface moist through germination, and wait for establishment.

Sod may fit when…

You need faster cover, are dealing with erosion, or want a grass that is not commonly established from seed. Run the sod quantity →
